Our cabin is an old log structure built in the 1930’s of cottonwood peeler cores from the old Nelson Veneer Factory. The property was once the first Nelson Lakeside Park, later a summer home for one of Nelson’s early Mayors, with two small log cabins.

When our family bought it in the sixties it was an overgrown, derelict property with a number of shacks rented to drunken friends of the owner.

We burnt the shacks, cleared the land, and hauled away old cars, boats and a greyhound bus over the next several years.

We now live in the original log cabin, which is well hidden in the center of our larger home.

The holiday cabin has been restored back to its original charm, with paneled wood painted walls and ceilings, hand split cedar shake roof, varnished wood floors, rustic and antique furnishings, and vintage bathroom fixtures. As well though it has been all rewired, insulated, and the kitchen appliances are a bit more modern.

The cabin is fully equipped so that you don’t need to bring much more than your own clothes and food. We supply all bedding, inside towels, kitchen utensils, dishes, and cookware. There is a phone, refrigerator and stove, TV/VCR with cable, microwave oven, and toaster. In the bedroom is a double bed and the futon couch in the living room that folds down into another double size bed. Outside there is a gas BBQ, picnic table, and lawn chairs. The phone is restricted to local calls, so you’ll need a calling card or to call collect for long distance calls. The large sandy private beach is just across our large front lawn. There is a firepit and beach chairs for nightly campfires, a canoe for your use, and some beach toys. There is also a cute little playhouse that I built for our own kids many years ago. We own about 300 feet of the best private beach property in Nelson. Our lot is over an acre in size and bordered by an RCMP complex on one side and my father’s beach property on the other, My father George, 84 years young, is a great source of old-time Kootenay stories and fishing information. The main views from the property are up the lake away from town, offering a view of Kokanee Glacier Park in the distance. We have two people-loving border-collie dogs that some guests say is what they most look forward to seeing every year.
